The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied that the wanted former Governor Yahaya Bello is not in its custody, contrary to claim by his media aide Ohiare Michael that his boss has surrendered himself to the commission.
Penpushing reports that Head, Media and Publicity of the commission Dele Oyewale in a statement sent to Penpushing Media on Wednesday said the claim was incorrect, adding that the embattled former Governor wanted for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest
‘Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody. Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest’, Oyewale wrote
Penpushing reports earlier on Wednesday aide to former Governor who has been on the run for about five months, said he (Bello) has surrendered to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invitation in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
The Director, Yahaya Bello Media Office in a press statement said the former governor was accompanied by high profile Nigerians to honour Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invitation at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
“This decision was made after due consultations with his family, legal team and political allies. The former governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had, all the while, only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process,” Michael stated
Penpushing further reports that the hiding Bello has about five months been snubbing court in Abuja where he was repeatedly scheduled to be arraigned on N80.2 billion money laundering charges pending against him.
