Muti’ah Badruddeen is a Nigerian writer, reproductive health physician and mother of three. An introvert, she dreams of eight-hour sleep nights and the dearth of shift-rotation healthcare jobs. A self-proclaimed bibliophile.

Muti’ah is passionate about telling stories of everyday Muslim women, and the various nuances of their identities and lives that modern commentary usually turns a blind eye at. This is especially true of Black African Muslim women, whose experiences are hardly reflected in literature. As a passionate advocate for the agency of women, Muti’ah’s books center these women and themes.

So far, Muti’ah has four books and a number of short stories published.

Umm ‘Abdillaah: For The Fertility-Challenged Muslim Woman (p. 2010) is a nonfiction (motivational / self-help) book, aimed at Muslim women dealing with infertility. Using her wealth of medical knowledge, and drawing upon texts of the islamic faith, Muti’ah draws from her own experience of seeking a child to guide readers through what to expect and how to navigate the landmine of fertility challenge.

Rekiya & Z (p. 2020) is a contemporary women’s fiction novel. Following the lives of two women, old friends who reconcile after a mutual loss. It explores the themes of Time and its fickleness, trauma, loss and the varying realities of Muslim Womanhood against the backdrop of Africa’s most populous country. Rekiya & Z was lauded by Hikaayat magazine as “carving spaces for Sub Saharan African Muslims in fiction”, and won the Daybreak Press Award and Fofky’s Readers’ Choice awards for Best Islamic Fiction in 2021. In 2022, this book placed Muti’ah as a finalist in TLC UK’s Pen Factor competition and winner of the SprinNG Women Author Prize in Nigeria.

Falter (p. 2021, initially 2003 as Faltering Steps) is a contemporary Young Adult novella. It is the coming-of-age tale following Yewande, a girl who has it all, as she tries to find her life’s purpose. Set at the turn of the 21st century, Falter provides insight to how young people navigate newly-awakened faith practice journeys and the influences that shape them along the way.

Not To Be Forgotten: Muslim Women Writers on Lived Experiences of the Covid-19 Pandemic (p. 2022) is a collection of Muslim Women writings on the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. As curator and editor, Muti’ah worked closely with nineteen Muslim women writers, including Caine Prize Winner, Leila Aboulela, one of Muti’ah’s literary influences. Containing short stories, essays and poems, the anthology is an effort to preserve Muslim women’s experiences of the greatest historical event of this generation.
