The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has set out awareness about the socio-economic challenges faced by women with disabilities, as well as advocate for policies that promote equitable access to employment, social protection, and procurement opportunities.

Penpushing report that the initiative aims to break systemic barriers hindering access to decent work, social protection, and procurement opportunities, thereby fostering sustainable economic empowerment.

The funding from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), and United Nations (UN) Women is implementing the project on the empowerment of women and girls with disabilities towards full and effective participation and gender equality in Adamawa State.

Penpushing further report that the mission noted that women with disabilities in Nigeria, particularly in Adamawa State, face deep-rooted discrimination, limited financial access, and inadequate policy implementation, which significantly restrict their economic participation.

The mission aligns with Nigeria’s commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), striving to drive policy reforms and inclusive economic development

Penpushing also reports that other key objectives include strengthen stakeholder engagement between government, civil society, private sector, and development partners, build the capacity of policymakers and business leaders on inclusive economic policies and develop actionable strategies to integrate gender and disability inclusion into economic policies

The mission will engage 170 stakeholders, including: government officials and policymakers, civil society organizations and disability rights advocates, private sector leaders and procurement officers, women-led businesses and entrepreneurs with disabilities, development partners, United Nations (UN) agencies and media professionals as well as other advocacy groups

Penpushing reports that expert presentations are insights on barriers, best practices, and policy recommendations, as well as panel discussions focused on high-level dialogues on inclusive employment and procurement.

The case studies are successful models of economic inclusion for women with disabilities, strategies for improving accessibility in procurement and social protection systems and strengthening collaboration between stakeholders for long-term impact.

Penpushing further reports that expected outcomes will be increased commitment from policymakers and private sector players to implement inclusive economic policies, strengthened partnerships among key stakeholders to advance gender and disability-responsive procurement.

This include capacity building for women with disabilities in business and employment, concrete action plans for integrating inclusive policies into Nigeria’s economic framework, enhanced awareness and advocacy for the rights of women with disabilities.

Penpushing also reports that others include media and public engagement, while the United Nations (UN) Women recognizes that members of the press play a crucial role in amplifying the mission’s message.

The mission will therefore, include extensive media coverage, including press releases, interviews, and social media campaigns to amplify key messages, while the United Nations (UN) Women hopes to engage journalists and media outlets to drive public awareness and advocacy on the importance of economic inclusion for women with disabilities.

Penpushing reports that, specifically, the media is expected to present report on key events, discussions, and commitments made during the mission and disseminate widely as the event is beyond Adamawa State or Nigeria’s northeast.

The highlight key issues are focus on the challenges and opportunities for women with disabilities in economic inclusion, while narrative should focus on the Interview women with disabilities.

Penpushing further report that there would be a need to equally interview policymakers, business leaders, and Civil Society Organisations(CSOs) representatives, and to promote as much as possible more women voices even during these interviews.
