The United Nations (UN) has declared that military coup is no more relevant across the globe, and therefore called on perpetrators of the illegality to retrace their steps in the interest of values of democracy.
Penpushing reports that, the Secretary General of the world body,Antonio Guteress made this known in a statement in reaction to recent coup in some African countries, pointing out that the role of the military is to defend their countries.
The scribe expressed disappointment that it is unfortunate that military in the 21st century engaged in attacking their government as well as fighting their people for power, rather than fight for their countries.
‘I am deeply concerned with the recent coup d’état in Burkina Faso. The role of the military must be to defend their countries and their peoples, not to attack their governments and to fight for power’, he stated.
Penpushing further reports that, Guteress noted that the coup has become a threat to international peace and security, and therefore appealed to the armies on need to assume their professional role of protecting their countries and re-establish democratic institutions
‘We have, unfortunately in the region, terrorist groups; we have threats to international peace and security. My appeal is for the armies of these countries to assume their professional role of armies, to protect their countries and re-establish democratic institutions.
Penpushing also reports that, he expressed dismay that some people are celebrating the coup even on the streets, stressing that it is easy to orchestrate them, but the values of democracy do not depend on the public opinion at one moment or another .
‘There have been some people, ordinary citizens, celebrating the coup on the streets. There are always celebrations for these kinds of situations. It’s easy to orchestrate them, but the values of democracy do not depend on the public opinion at one moment or another. Democratic societies are a value that must be preserved. Military coups are unacceptable in the 21st century’, he emphasised.
