Two members of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church Onikoko Parish in Itori of Ewekoro local government of Ogun State have been reported drown, and were later confirmed dead at the hospital after being rescued from the river.
Penpushing reports that Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola who confirmed the incident identified the deceased as Femi Akinola (32) of Odo Eran Itire Lagos State and Tunde Falade (35) of Kola Alagbado in Lagos.
The police spokesperson said a church member Adebayo Adeosun had reported at the station at about 6.30pm, that some boys numbering about seven who came from Lagos on the 27 August 2023 for the Church inauguration, left the church premises to swim, and got drowned in the process.
‘The two persons drowned were later identified as Femi Akinola “m” aged 32yrs of Odo Eran Itire Lagos State and Tunde Falade “m” aged 35yrs of Kola Alagbado in Lagos, after they were rescued from the heavy tides. They were rushed to the Health Center in Itori where they were unfortunately confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty’, Odutola said.
Penpushing further reports that she explained that the Divisional Police Officer Olayemi Jacob detailed his team to visit the scene upon receipt of the report, adding that he ascertained that there were no marks of violence and no foul play suspected.
The Command Public Relations Officer added that the remains of the victims as at the time of filing this report have since been evacuated to General Hospital, Ifo for autopsy reports and later deposited in the same morgue.
Penpushing reports that Odutola said the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu while extending the police deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time, assured that the command remains committed to promoting public safety and preventing such tragedies in the future, and warned restive youths to steer clear of rivers whose depth or tides they cannot ascertain.
