The Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has approved the nomination of Olayemi Cardoso to serve as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and equally announced the appointment of the Deputy Governor for the apex bank

Penpushing reports that Special Adviser on Media to President, Ajuri Ngelale,  made this known in a statement explaining that the new appointee was nominated for a term of five years at the first instance, pending his confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

‘This directive is in conformity with Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which vests in the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the authority to appoint the Governor and Four (4) Deputy Governors for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’, Ngelale said.

Penpushing further reports that the statement added that in similar development the President has approved the nomination of four new Deputy governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for a term of five years at the first instance, pending their confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

The Special Adviser on Media to the President in the press statement made available to journalists said the newly appointed Deputy Governors include Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello.

‘In line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, the President expects the above-listed nominees to successfully implement critical reforms at the Central Bank of Nigeria, which will enhance the confidence of Nigerians and international partners in the restructuring of the Nigerian economy toward sustainable growth and prosperity for all,” the statement said.

Penpushing also reports that it is recalled that in June, 2023 the President had suspended Godwin Emefiele from office as Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) sequel to an investigation of his (Emefiele) office and the planned reforms in the economy’s financial sector.

The embattled Emefiele, was on June 10,2023, arrested at his home in Lagos by the State Security Service (SSS) and flown to Abuja for interrogations, and was subsequently arraigned on 25 July, 2023 arraigned at a Federal High Court in Lagos for illegal possession of firearms and live ammunition.

Penpushing reports that in mid-August, the Nigerian government withdrew the initial charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition filed against the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor.

The Government, however, after filed fresh charges of conspiracy and procurement fraud against the suspended Emefile, and following his trial the President appointed Folashodun Shonubi, the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) of the bank in an acting capacity.
