Bolaji Obabiyi (intern)

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State on Tuesday received thousands of defectors from different political parties and support groups, as the party described the development as a major boost to its preparations for the 2027 governorship election.

Penpushing reports that the event, held at the party secretariat, witnessed the formal reception of over 4,500 supporters who reportedly defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yayi door-to-door campaign group, African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogun Central Electorate Association, Get Done Associates and other political support groups in Abeokuta and across the Egba axis.

The Chairman of the Egba Agenda Forum and Convener of the Ogun Rescue Movement, Chie Abdul Akeem Owolabi Mustapha, said the defectors voluntarily joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because they desired a change in the political direction of Ogun State.

Penpushing further reports that Mustapha emphasized that the new members have aligned with the movement to support the governorship ambition of Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu in the 2027 election.

“We have today received over 4,500 defectors from APC, Yayi door-to-door, ADC and several political support groups across Abeokuta and the Egba axis. They have come to identify with the movement we have created to support Hon. Ladi Adebutu for the 2027 governorship election,” he said.

Penpushing also reports that Mustapha urged the new members to remain committed to the party, expressing confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would record victory in the next governorship election.

“Ogun Central is the battleground, and we are ready to demonstrate that the people stand firmly with the PDP and Ladi Adebutu. Together, we are determined to rescue Ogun State,” he stated.

Penpushing reports that he explained the reasons behind the mass defection, adding that many residents had become dissatisfied with the current administration, alleging that the government had failed to improve the welfare of the people.

“You cannot tell us that life is better today than it was four or eight years ago. When people no longer see progress, they naturally seek an alternative. That is why many are moving to the PDP,” he added.

‎Penpushing further reports that the Governorship candidate of the opposition party Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, addressing the gathering described the occasion as a reception for new entrants rather than a campaign event.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer emphasized that the party remains the platform capable of restoring prosperity and good governance to both Ogun State and Nigeria, and encouraged the new members who had yet to register officially with the party to do so, stressing that a united membership would strengthen the PDP ahead of future elections.

Penpushing also reports that he criticised the current administration, accusing it of corruption, poor governance and insensitivity to the plight of the people, while insisting that only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could provide a credible alternative.

The national officer of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Sunday Sholarin, in his remarks said the growing number of defectors reflected the frustration of many Ogun residents with the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Penpushing reports that Sholarin explained that the defectors were motivated not only by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a political platform but also by their confidence in the party’s candidates.

The national officer alleged that All Progressives Congress (APC) administration had failed to deliver meaningful development to the Egba axis despite years in government, leading many residents to seek a new political direction.

Penpushing further reports that Sholarin boasted that candidates of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) possess the experience, compassion and commitment required to improve the lives of the people.

The party leader pointed out that their longstanding relationship with the state and history of supporting communities had earned them public trust, and expressed optimism that the influx of new members would further strengthen the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) structure across Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
