Stakeholders in Agricultural sector including the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET), Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), and Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (OXFAM) on Wednesday sensitised Nigerian farmers on how to improve on provision of climatic information services to farmers across the country.

Penpushing reports that, the Executive Secretary, Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), Resource Center, Sulaimon Arigbabu  explained that the workshop was to sensitised farmers on food security and sustainable development and how climate change affect food production.

The Agenda scribe while speaking during the one day Agricultural Stakeholders Workshop for farmers held at Nigerian Institute Of Social And Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan lamented that food production is one of the major problem facing the nation because of increase in its price, adding that farmers needs a lot of information about the climate change, weather, rain, and temperature for them to be more productive.

“Farmers need to know importance of climate change on food production particularly as it affect the small farmers because they are critical to food security, they require timely and regular information about climate change. Farmers are not getting the information on time due to gap between them and the government, which make most of them to take wrong decision in their farming activities.”

Penpushing further reports that Arigbabu however said that Nigerian food production would have been far better in the food security index if there is adequate information on how to improve provision of climate information services to farmers.

The Assistant General Manager, Climate Services Unit, Nigerian Metrological Agency ((NIMET),Oyegade Adeleke urged farmers to always follows Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) forecast which he said would assist them not only in planting but in harvest.

The Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) boss however said that though extension workers are few, but government will improve on numbers of extension workers so that farm product will not continue rusting away.

The Commissioner for Agriculture in Oyo State, Hon. Adebisi Adeniyi noted the state government is creating enabling environment for agricultural investors to come to the state and enhance food production, adding that this has been increasing rate at which farmers operates on their respective farms.
