The Gender Development Initiative (GenDi), a Non-Governmental Organisation in collaboration with Government Netherland on Tuesday organized a -day training in addressing the critical issue of Trafficking in Persons (TIP).

Penpushing reports that the training held in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital engaged participants which include educators, community leaders, civil society actors, and government agencies discussing series of topics and well as effective contributions from participants.

The training topics include child labour/abuse, slavery, poverty, conflicts, trauma, stigma, economic loss, online grooming, signs of trafficking, prevention, protection, community responsibility among others

Penpushing further reports that the workshop in same vein looked into understanding trafficking in person, consequences, referral pathways and National Agency For Prohibition of Trafficking (NAPTIP) strategies, school awareness planning, school improvement project discussion as well as action plan and role mapping

The training which focused on School Anti-Trafficking Education and Advocacy Project (STEAP), also involved partnership of International Centre for Migration Policy Development, National Agency For Prohibition of Trafficking (NAPTIP) and Ogun State Ministry of Education

Penpushing also reports that Executive Director of Gender Development Initiative (GenDi), Prof Bunmi Ashimolowo earlier in her welcome speech said the presence of participants reflected their commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and future of vulnerable individuals, particularly children and women in our communities.

‘This one-day workshop is designed to build awareness, enhance knowledge, and strengthen community-based responses to TIP, especially in school environments and local communities’, she stated.

‘With the increasing complexity and evolving nature of trafficking, it is vital that we, as stakeholders—educators, community leaders, civil society actors, and government agencies—are equipped to detect, prevent, and respond effectively.

Penpushing reports that Ashimolowo explained the workshop goals which include to provide participants with a clear understanding of Trafficking in Person (TIP), including its definitions, elements, and legal framework.

The Director added that others are to explore the root causes and driving factors behind Trafficking In Person (TIP), to highlight the consequences of trafficking on individuals and society and to identify emerging trends and red flags in trafficking, particularly online and in schools.

Penpushing further reports that she explained that, to strengthen referral pathways and introduce National Agency For Prohibition of Trafficking (NAPTIP) strategies for addressing Trafficking In Persons (TIP), to develop actionable community and school engagement plans that can be implemented locally and to foster collaboration among stakeholders for long-term impact and prevention.
