The controversial activist Omoyele Sowore has been arraigned in court over allegation of cybercrime charge against him by the police for referring to Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as illegal police boss.
Penpushing reports that Sowore, who was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja however, pleaded not guilty to cybercrime charges to all 17 counts read to him, while earlier in the proceedings, which started at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sowore’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshall from Falana and Falana Chambers, pointed out errors in the indictment filed by the police, including the misspelling of Sowore’s first name as Omoleye instead of Omoyele in all the 17 counts.
The police had earlier filed the charges on Tuesday.at the Federal High Court in Abuja, while the errors identified by the counsel prompted the police prosecutor to apply for the court’s permission to amend the charges to reflect Sowore’s correct name.
Penpushing further reports that among those present were former a senator, Shehu Sani; the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe; the Country Director, Action Aid, Andrew Mamedu, and his predecessor, Ene Obi.
The others include some Nigerian youths and members of the Sowore-led Take It Back Movement (TIB) who thronged the court in support of the human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC).
