A fatal crash occurred at Buhari Estate, along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday claimed lives of sixteen people and three others suistained various degrees of injuries.

Penpushing reports that Chief Route Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) Ogun State Command ,Florence Okpe made this known in a statement explaining that it was a lone accident which occurred at about 1.00pm.

The Route Commander added that the crash involved a white Mazda Bus with registration number KJA949YJ which caught fire and burnt the victims beyond recognition, stating that a total of 21 passengers were involved.

Penpushing further reports that Okpe said the injured victims as at the time of filing this report were taken to Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta while the corpses are still at the scene waiting for evacuation, by the rescue team of the sector command.

“The lone crash involved a White Mazda Bus with registration number KJA949YJ. Rescue operation was carried out by operatives of RS2.2 Abeokuta Sector Command at the scene. A total of 21 people were involved in the crash. The genders of the victims couldn’t be ascertained at the scene because they were burnt beyond recognition”, she said.

“A total of 16 people were killed in the crash while 3 sustained various degree of injuries. The injured victims were taken to Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta while the corpses are still at the scene waiting for evacuation. The suspected cause of the crash was fire outbreak in the vehicle that was also having a filled gas cylinder in it, which led to the explosion”, Okpe explained

Penpushing also reports that the statement said the Sector Commander of the Command, Akinwumi Fasakin quickly moved to the crash scene with his team for rescue operation but he was not pleased with the occurrence that has resulted in lifes being lost, because of carelessness on the part of the driver, and it could have been avoided.

The Command boss stated that the driver should have objected to carrying a cylinder filled with gas, cautioning that highly flammable items should be transported with care and by designated vehicles driven by trained drivers only, and equally joined in the clearing of obstruction for free flow of traffic.

Penpushing reports that the statement emphasised that Fashakin, however, advised motorists and passengers to put safety first while using the roads, as he sympathized with the family of the deceased and pray God comforts them.
