The President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Maureen Chigbo, has called on the members to be cautious on need to distinguish themselves as entrepreneurs in the online media community.
Penpushing reports that Chigbo gave the charge in her welcome address at the 8th annual conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the body held at Reverton Hotel in Lokoja, Kogi State, stressing that it was no more news that online is the future of journalism globally.
The proactive and first female President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) emphasized that her colleagues know the fact that they are all mediapreneurs, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the online media community.
Penpushing further reports that she explained that even traditional news organs have realized that online is the future of journalism globally and are equally rushing in, adding that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) was aimed to reinvigorate members’ businesses while adhering to ethical rules.
The President on capacity building stated that the choice of experienced members to serve as resource persons was deliberate, adding that were brought together to open eyes of the practitioners on how to succeed
“We have brought our members that have succeeded in various aspects to talk to members so more people can succeed. That is what peer review does to us. Today is capacity-building, peer review, and talking to GOCOP partners. We also have our annual general meeting (AGM) today where we give account of stewardship.”
Penpushing also reports that the Publisher of Realnews online, explained that the guild has its own Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, disclosing that one of the projects was to visit orphanage
‘We will visit an orphanage to give back to society. We recommend this to all our corporate members because we must put something aside each year in our different publishing outfits to give back to society.”
The number one online publisher expressed appreciation to members for solidarity and support and equally commended Kogi State Government for hosting the conference, as well as kudos to the planning committee, and members across the country who converged on the state for the conference
Penpushing reports that a resource person Dr Maxwell Amuchie in his presentation titled, ‘Low Hanging Fruits; A Revenue Strategy for Online Publishers’, explained that it was to help online publishers answer a crucial worry in the online publishing business, which is how to earn sustainable revenue from the practice.
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sundiata Post Media Limited, identified the obvious revenue areas which he called low hanging fruits, and named some of them as: sponsored posts, link insertions, text link adverts, and press releases.
Penpushing further report that Amuchie on major revenue schemes available to online publishers, noted banner adverts, special projects writing especially with state governments and agencies, digital advertising, social media revenue, events management, as well as licensing and syndication.
The resource person in same vein gave hints on how to maximise the revenue areas, pointing out that members have the responsibility to define their business strategies and make their websites offer value that can attract patronage.”
