The Ekiti State Government has issued out two weeks warning to farmers and herders operating in the state to register or be booted out by the authorities, as the two weeks grace commences on Sunday, March 22, 2021
Penpushing reports that, in February, the government conducted a two-week registration of farmers and herders, but not all those involved make use of the opportunity, hence, the resolve to give another two-week window to register with the state government.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Olabode Adetoyi, in a statement declared that the exercise was expedient to ensure that all farmers and herders could be accounted for, adding that the registration was also aimed at ensuring peace between the two groups and bringing incessant clashes between them to an end.
Penpushing further reports that, the statement emphasised that, the exercise was in consonance with the National Livestock Transformation Programme of the Federal Government,noting that clashes between farmers and herders posed dangers to human and food security, hence the need to take proactive measures to curb the menace.
The Special Adviser to Governor Kayode Fayemi on security matters Ebenezer Ogundana, on his part warned that “whoever failed to register would be treated as a criminal would be compelled to leave the state.
Penpushing also reports that, Ogundana who is the chairman, herders-farmers peace committee, however,pointed out that the nation’s laws allows all citizens to stay in any part of the country but they must adhere to relevant laws.
Meanwhile, the Director-General, Office of Transformation and Service Delivery, Mobolaji Aluko, also explained thatall registered farmers and herders would be issued with identity cards.
