The alleged reckless driving of a white colour Cabstar truck with registration number REG- ZUR 601 XY loaded with watermelon has claimed lives of three persons on Sunday along Kara bridge axis of Lagos-Ibadan expressway, while in the ensuring confusion angry mob set the vehicle ablaze.
Penpushing reports that the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi who confirmed the sad incident said an eyewitness account explained that the blue colour Iveco truck with registration number REG- AAB 414 ZY developed a mechanical fault road after colliding with another vehicle which drove against traffic, inbound Lagos on the Kara bridge.
‘However, while the driver and the motor boy were trying to sort out mechanical fault in question on the road, a Cabstar, loaded with watermelon which was on excessive speed, lost control and rammed into the Iveco truck from behind, killing all the 3 occupants in the Cabstar , including the driver, due to the impact of the crash’, Akinbiyi added.
The statement said in the ensuing confusion, some traders/hoodlums from no where stormed the Kara bridge in the wee-hours of the night and set the Iveco truck ablaze because they believed the Iveco truck caused the accident.
‘Furthermore, it took the intervention of TRACE, POLICE MILITARY and the Ogun State Fire Service before normalcy could be restored on the Kara bridge for incoming vehicles inbound Lagos at that hour’, Akinbiyi explained.
Penpushing also reports that as at the time of filing this report Akinbiyi disclosed that families of the deceased had retrieved corpses for burial, while the accidented vehicles towed to Adigboluja Police Station Ojodu for further investigation.
‘Nonetheless, all the 3 commuters who lost their lives in the Cabstar has been taken away by their family members for burial and the accidented vehicles towed to Adigboluja Police Station Ojodu for further investigation’, he wrote.
The statement said while the Ogun State Traffic Agency commiserate with the families of the dead victims, drivers are again warned against the danger of night travel and excessive speed.
