The popular Kuto market which shares vicinity with a motor park in the heart of Abeokuta, located in Abeokuta South Local Government of Ogun State Capital is now prone to cholera outbreak, as heap of refuse takes over the market and its environs.
Penpushing reports that, investigation showed that, the roadside and median have been turned to refuse depot, in a reckless manner, that it has now become herculean task for motorists and passerby to have easy passage in the area.
The known populated market and the motorpark where passengers take vehicle in and out of Abeokuta has now become and eye sour, which lacks proper hygiene, and has become health risk for the traders, residents and other stakeholders in the town
The findings showed that, the odour emanating from the heaps, turned to attraction centre for flies which swarm on the refuse, while number of people passing through the area and traders were seen covering their nostrils because of the stench
Penpushing further reports that, many of the traders who spoke during an interview attributed the heap of refuse to the non-challance of the environmental officials, who they alleged have never being proactive in disposing the refuse at the appropriate time.
The traders equally blame some of their members, who lacks manner on how to be health conscious, and fond of dumping refuse indiscriminately, an illegal act discovered being carried out late night after the end of trading period.
Penpushing also reports a female trader who does not want her name in print, stated that government had not being doing enough towards evacuation of refuse, pointing out that it is observed that, it is when the container provided at the market full to the brim, and unattended to by environmental officials that, people resolved to dump refuse indiscriminately.
The worrisome development as at the time of filing this report was noted to be forcing many motorists to avoid plying the road, as findings revealed that, many of them from both end of the road leading to the market always make a detour.
Penpushing reports that, a medical expert who spoke on the ugly condition of the area, said the heap of refuse, couple with swam of flies, remain a serious health risk to the residents, affirming that, if urgent attention was not focus on the refuse, it may result on cholera outbreak.
The medical expert therefore called on the Ogun State Government to as a matter of urgency rise up to be risk involved, before it gets out of hand, and equally advised those in the habit of indiscriminate dump of refuse, to retrace their steps in the interest of the populace
