The Accord Party (AP) Oyo State Chapter has announced popular broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat as its governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, as another faction of the party pronounced Olakunle Busari as the authentic party flagbearer.
Penpushing reports that the development was said to have prompted the factional National Chairman of the Accord Party (AP), Chris Imumolen, to nullify the entire exercise, insisting that neither Hamzat nor Busari is the valid governorship candidate of the party.
The National Deputy Secretary, Abdulraman Muhammed, however, announced Hamzat as the authentic candidate in a video posted on X after the conclusion of the party’s governorship primary on Tuesday.
“Three aspirants bought our party’s governorship form. We screened out two of them, and we found Oriyomi AbdulRahmon Hamzat as the authentic candidate and the one who won his own primaries’ the official said.
Penpushing further reports that the official while presenting certificate of clearance to the broadcaster, however, did not disclose the votes polled by the aspirants who took part in the primary.
The announcement, however, sparked controversy after another group within the party declared Olakunle Busari winner of a parallel governorship primary, claiming he polled 29,427 votes to defeat Hamzat, who allegedly secured 18,716 votes.
Penpushing also reports that National Organising Secretary of the Accord Party(AP), Ibe ThankGod, dismissed reports of a faction within the party and insisted that Hamzat remained the party’s sole recognised governorship candidate.
The Secretary said there was no faction, stressing that the party leadership fixed the timetable for the sale of forms and screening, adding that Oriyomi did everything within the stipulated time.
Penpushing reports that he stated that three aspirants which include Hamzat, former Assistant Inspector-General of Police Fatai Owoseni, and Busari had purchased the party’s governorship forms.
The party scribe stated that Hamzat completed his documentation and participated in the screening exercise conducted between 19 and 21 May, 2026 while Owoseni failed to submit the required documents.
Penpushing further reports that ThankGod added that Busari arrived for screening on May 22, 2026 after the deadline had elapsed, leading to his disqualification for coming outside the specified date and time
The official insisted Hamzat consequently became the sole qualified aspirant and was affirmed as the party’s candidate in a primary election witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
