Maureen Edozie in Enugu

The Nigeria Police has faulted claim and narrative circulating online about an alleged hack of the Enugu State Government’s official account, resulting in the theft of N1.09 billion.

Penpushing reports that the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi in a statement declared that the assertion was completely unfounded and entirely baseless, stressing that there has been no hacking of the account, and the allegations of a theft.

‘The Nigeria Police Force hereby categorically dismiss the false narrative and rumour circulating online about an alleged hack of the Enugu State Government’s official account, resulting in the theft of N1.09 billion. This assertion is completely unfounded. There has been no hacking of the Enugu State Government’s account, and the allegations of a theft amounting to N1.09 billion are entirely baseless’, Adejobi wrote.

Penpushing further reports that the statement explained that the case, which was investigated by the National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC) of the police was a case of procurement fraud, not a cyber-breach.

The statement added that the suspect has been arrested in connection with this fraud, and the funds have already been recovered, stating that the Enugu State Government and other ministries, departments, and agencies of government and corporate firms are in partnership with the National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC).

Penpushing also reports that Adejobi said the authorities have established comprehensive and fortified security protocols to safeguard their financial systems, and called on the citizens to refrain from engaging in misinformation and to always verify the credibility of news sources.
