An inspector Augustine Jeremiah and a corporal, Miracle Ehirim have been demoted by the Delta State Police Command after they were found guilty of extortion and other misconduct over a viral video showing them receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale terminal inside a police station.
Penpushing reports that the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday explaining that Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the orderly room trial of the erring officers attached C Division, Asaba.
The statement stated that the officers were captured in a viral video on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station, and were found guilty of “Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion and Discreditable Conduct,” contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
Penpushing further reports that Edafe added that following the disciplinary proceedings, Jeremiah was reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, while Ehirim was demoted from Corporal to Constable.
The Commissioner reiterated the command’s position on extortion, stressed that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu unequivocally prohibits the use of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations.”
Penpushing also reports that he warned that no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, adding that any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action.
The police boss urged officers and men of the command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens, pointing out that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others.

The Commissioner equally encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the appropriate channels, assuring that complaints against erring officers would be investigated and treated in accordance with the law.
