A 29 year old fake  surgeon, Apkoviri Jimmy has been arrested  by Bayelsa State Police Command in Irhodo Community, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, over alleged impersonation.

Penpushing reports that, the suspect  claimed to be a graduate of Psychology from Delta State University, Abraka, was arrested at a popular private hospital, Tobis Hospital, while trying to secure employment as a surgeon.

The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, Mike Okoli, who paraded the suspect in Yenagoa, said he  had been going round hospitals in Delta and Bayelsa states pretending to be a  qualified Medical Doctor.

Penpushing further reports that, the police boss said the suspect had posed as Dr Charles Ume who is working in Taraba State, adding that residents became suspicious  when he could not effectively  use medical terminologies during medical diagnosis.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, in the State Ebiye Sawyer while reacting over the incident  said the state government was alive to its responsibility of fighting  quackery in the state”.

Penpushing also reports that, Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Bayelsa State Branch, Dr Ngowari Torunana, said  the suspect was confirmed as fake upon his arrest ,adding that the   Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria was earlier being contacted.

The suspect was said to have  admitted committing the crime, adding that   he was not the owner of the medical certificate in his possession and that he has been using a friend’s certificate to seek a job as a medical doctor.

“I met the owner of the credentials in a bus while travelling to Abuja and we took some pictures. While transferring the picture to me, he also transferred copies of his credentials. This is the first time I am using it,” he said.
