The Oyo State Primary Health Care Board has commenced the process of adapting the National Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy (STOP)as part of efforts to strengthen reproductive healthcare and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
Penpushing reports that Board’s Executive Secretary, Dr Muideen Olatunji disclosed this during a two-day adaptation process at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, explaining that the initiative was intended to support evidence-based policies, improve access to quality services and strengthen healthcare providers’ capacity.
The Secretary said national guidelines, developed by the Federal Ministry of Health, provide direction for safe termination of pregnancy for legally recognised indications, stressing that. adapting them at state level can help healthcare professionals better understand the relevant medical and legal provisions and improve the consistency of care.
Penpushing further reports that the process is an important step towards translating national guidance into state-level practice, however, adaptation should not be confused with a new abortion law or an automatic expansion of the legal grounds for termination.
