The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, has introduced a customized Olowu cowry designed in the form of a gift card, aimed to promote the welfare of children in selected schools and support residents of Owu Community

Penpushing reports that the monarch made this known at the commissioning an eco-friendly Ajibosin hall in his palace, an initiative which is part of the programme outlined to celebrate his third-year anniversary on the throne, explaining that the introduction of the customized cowry, confirms the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage.

The royal father explained that the cowry can be used by pupils who are beneficiaries of a support programme of a meal per day, to buy food from government-approved vendors, adding that the vendors can later exchange the cowries for real currency from the palace.

Penpushing further reports that the monarch stated that the reintroduction of cowry as a means of exchange in Owu kingdom was to encourage children to learn more about their culture and appreciate their heritage.

“The idea is to find a way to introduce a currency that we give to those pupils in the primary schools that we give a meal per day. Again, if you think about cowry, this is a currency that probably a lot of our young ones don’t even know or maybe they are not even aware of the kind of currency we used before the European came over”, he said

Penpushing also reports that former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, in his remarks commended the initiative, pointing out that it is a significant step towards preserving Yoruba culture and tradition.

The former Governor who is Owu indigene boasted that Owu is known for standard and positive things in the society and praised the monarch for his contributions to the welfare and well-being of the people in his community.

‘Kabiyesi is bringing back those old good memories of our forebears and there is a saying that, what cannot be measured, can’t be managed. So, he is trying to do a lot of social interventions. So, they are trying to introduce this cowry to sons and daughters of Owu and those who have come to associate with us in Owu Kingdom”, he stated

“I am impressed by the Olowu’s commitment to promoting the welfare of children, women, and other vulnerable groups in the community. I urge other privileged Nigerians to support his vision and emulate his gesture towards the development of our land’, Amosun said

Penpushing reports that the event featured the commissioning of the kingdom office, comprises the office of the Olowu and different sections for staff in the palace by Chief Ismail Akindele, the Bobaseto of Owu Kingdom.
