The old students of Imala Community Grammar School  popularly called ‘Imacogold 83-85 sets’, has instituted annual prizes for best students and teachers in the college, an initiative designed to rejig scholarly values, spotlight the deeming glory of academics and eradicate gangsterism in schools

Penpushing reports that the association kick started the project at its maiden Annual General Meeting(AGM)  held at the college premises, where prizes for excellence, cash and  gifts were handed over to twenty students of the college

The Chairman Board of Governors of the School, Engr. Moses Adediran while speaking at the opening ceremony noted how pertinent it had become for all stakeholders to rise up and save the basic and secondary education system.

“The situation is appalling concerning the dilapidation of infrastructure, and for the high decadence, fear for the survival of the next generation is palpable. Parents have abandoned their responsibilities regarding the upbringing of their children’, he noted

Penpushing further reports that, Adediran lamented that most parents neglect their roles regarding the upbringing of their children as they pursued money and carrier to the extent that value had virtually disappeared among the young ones, and with the overwhelming challenges before government other social agents must come to the rescue.

The principal of the school, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Faniyan, recently deployed to the school, who was assisted by the immediate past principal, Mrs. Mojisola Pius said children were no longer interested in education but quick money as a result of the numerous injustices and unpunished crimes in the society.

“They see smugglers and thugs as mentors while looking up to becoming Okada riders and Yahoo boys to make quick money. This is impeding instruction in the school apart from the huge deficit in infrastructure”.

Penpushing also reports that, the principal listed the needs of the school to include rehabilitation of classrooms; staff room, principal`s office, laboratory; water, electricity, computers and fence while calling on the alumni to assist the school.

“We appreciate your efforts since your coming together but we indeed really need much more, just as we believe this your first AGM will be the beginning of better days for the school to make learning more attractive to the children”, she said

The National Chairman of the association, Comrade Yemi Akintunde, earlier in his speech explained the reasons behind the Annual General Meeting(AGM) which was planned in ensuring that old students are   physically present to see the deplorable condition of their former school.

“It’s almost forty years when last some of us saw the school, seeing things physically will encourage our members to pick up projects to assist the school. We already have started the borehole project to provide water and toilets to stop the insecure manner the pupils go into the bush’, Akintunde said

‘We have also provided sporting materials to engage them meaningfully at their leisure which we believe will reduce gangstersim among them. The prizes and awards are however instituted to return value to its right of place among the children who no longer see going to school as of any good use”, he said.

The Chairman of the old students’ body promised on behalf of the association that the requests of the school would be attended to one after the other, while calling on the old students to respond to the clarion call of their school.

Penpushing reports that, Imala Community Grammar School was established in 1979 by the Olabisi Onabanjo administration, while the gestures are coming on the hills of recent reports of deadly violence among secondary school pupils which led to the closure of 15 affected schools in Ogun State.

The teacher adjudged the best in the school, Mr. Taiwo Solomon Oke, was equally awarded prize while notable among those bestowed with leadership award for their various roles in the development of Imala Community Grammar School, include Oba (Apostle) Moses Adegboyega Olabode(Omola of Imalaland)

Penpushing further reports that others are late Hon. Timothy Adekanmbi, one time Deputy Speaker, House of Assembly, Ogun State , late Chief Oluwole Alaran, one time Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, Ogun State, late Rev. B.O. Onanuga, first Principal of the school, Pa Olufemi Ogidiolu, second Principal of the school and the teacher adjudged most impactful during the days of the sets in school, Mr. Gbenga Fakunle.
