The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State   Command, Abiodun Alamutu has disclosed that the command is working in collaboration with relevant agency of the government on how to mop up arms in circulation.

Penpushing reports that Alamutu made this known on Sunday while featuring on a current affairs live radio programme of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC), explaining that part of the strategy is by tracing the source of the weapons that are in free use through unlawful proliferation.

The police boss pointed out that the war against cultism and other social vices is a collective responsibility of stakeholders which include traditional rulers, community leaders, religious leaders, educational institutions as well as the parents.

Penpushing further reports that he emphasized that the collaborative efforts required a lot of consultations which will be anchored by the traditional rulers, adding that the command in similar vein, has employed new approach through moral persuasion

The police boss explained that this was in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police to the police formations nationwide to allow people who are willing to voluntarily surrender arms and renounce their membership of secret cults to do so without any conditions attached.

Penpushing also reports that Alamutu appealed to government and other stakeholders on need to device a means of gainfully engaging the youths; harness their ebullient energy by dissuading them from cultism and other negative ideologies.

The commissioner noted regrettably that some parents and religious leaders are abdicating their responsibilities, submitting that the youths learn easily through imitation, and observed the need for the society to go back to the old system of communal living, where other elderly people can easily scold or chastise the younger ones in order to collectively get the youths on the right track.

Penpushing reports that Alamutu blamed the notion of get rich quick syndrome and well as the mentality of ‘you are on your own’ ” as being responsible for the growing threats of the dastardly act, emphasizing all hands must be on deck to reverse the ugly trend.
