The Ogun State Government has organized a ‘train the trainers’ programme for frontline health workers, a programme jointly executed by the Primary Health Care Development Board, Ministry of Health and National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA).
Penpushing reports that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tommy Coker in her speech at the training held in Ijebu-Ode pointed out that primary healthcare is the bedrock of the health sector and at the front burner of both the federal and state governments.
The Commissioner added that Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration was committed to improving primary healthcare system in the state by renovating and equipping health centres across the Local Government Areas in the state.
‘Governor Abiodun has taken primary health as a priority to improve and strengthen the primary health system. He has renovated Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the LGAs and also equipped them with modern equipment, ensure adequate power supply, quality drugs, tricycle ambulances, to ease transportation in case of emergencies or referrals”, she said.
Penpushing further reports that Coker noted that the federal government was committed to the health sector through his ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, which led to the training of 120 frontline health workers across the country.
The Commissioner, however, affirmed that Ogun state was a recipient of the second batch of the programme, stressing that the present administration had taken primary health care to a higher level, as general health and eye care had been incorporated into maternal and child health care.
Penpushing also reports that the South-West Zonal Director, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) Mr. Rotimi Oyewole earlier pointed out that the training would widen the horizon of participants and improve the health system.
The Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Healthcare Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, in his remarks appreciated the state government and all development partners in ensuring affordable and efficient health care delivery in the state, urging participants to make good use of the skills acquired for the development of the health sector in the state.
Penpushing reports that in their goodwill messages, representatives of Development Partners in the state, Dr. Catherine Bello from World Health Organization (WHO), Mrs. Florence Moloku from United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Pham. Michael Ohue of APIN Public Health Initiative and Mrs. Olajumoke Korede of Maristopes Health, lauded the initiative of the organisers.
They emphasized that it was an important aspect of acquiring more skills and knowledge which would improve the standard of health care in the state, charging the trainees to impart the knowledge in the discharge of their duties.
