The Ogun State Government has soft-pedalled on its earlier directive of ban on graduation ceremonies in both public and private schools, with a new directive that such activities can hold in moderate manner.
Penpushing reports that in a circular which is an update of the earlier circular with refence number PRVS 426/4 dated June 17, 2026, issued by, Director of Education (Private Schools) A.A Bisiriyu said the development became necessary in consideration of concerns raised by stakeholders and in the interest of protecting parents and guardians from unnecessary financial burdens.
The circular reference number PRVS 426/5, dated June 18, 2026 through the Zonal Education Officers emphasized that graduation activities should now be restricted strictly to learners in primary six, JSS 3, and SSS 3, who are completing a recognized stage of their education.
Penpushing further reports that, the circular, however, stated that the organization of graduation ceremonies for learners in nursery, kindergarten, and all other non-terminal classes is prohibited, adding that government considers such ceremonies unnecessary
The circular explained that graduation ceremonies for learners in primary six, JSS 3, and SSS 3 shall be conducted in a modest manner and at no financial cost to learners, parents, or guardians.
Penpushing also reports that the circular directed that the use of canopies, Aso Ebi, customized attire, or any other forms of extravagant social displays during graduation ceremonies is strictly prohibited.
The circular said schools are encouraged to focus on academic recognition and character development rather than elaborate social events that place undue financial pressure on parents and guardians.
‘All Proprietors/School Heads and Administrators of public and private schools are hereby directed to give this circular the widest publicity and ensure strict compliance with its provisions’, Bisiriyu wrote.
Penpushing reports that the circular declared that any school found to be in violation of these directives shall be sanctioned in accordance with the relevant regulations and guidelines governing the operation of schools in Ogun State.
