The Ogun State government has sealed six buildings in Yewa South and Abeokuta South Local Government Areas of the state in an effort to enforce building regulations of the government and promote public safety.
Penpushing reports that Acting General Manager of Building Production Management Authority (OGBPMA), Builder Titilayo Oladogbon made this known, explaining that the buildings, which were sealed during routine enforcement exercise by the agency, had committed various contraventions including building too close to waterways and already distressed ones.
The Acting General Manager added that others include building without obtaining authorisations, commencing demolition without obtaining permits, and other related offences, pointing out that distressed buildings posed a threat to both the inhabitants and general public, as such buildings already showed signs of structural failure and impending collapse, which could lead to avoidable loss of lives and property.
“When contravention notices are served, owners of such buildings are expected to contact the Authority with necessary documents. Also, it is important that a letter of intent be submitted seven days before commencement of any building project,” Oladogbon emphasised.
Penpushing further reports that she stated that as part of criteria for demolition, a demolition permit must be obtained while professional supervision must be available on site for safety reasons, recalling that all the sealed sites had earlier been served with all statutory notices which were ignored, necessitating the need for the enforcement exercise.
