The Ogun State Government on Wednesday met with the Association of Professional Counsellors of Nigeria, (APROCON) to work out modalities in having at least a councillor in each school across the state.
Penpushing reports that the Commissioner of Education Science and Technology, Prof Arigbabu led the government team while the Chairperson of the association Dr Emily Adeniji led her team comprising 13-member delegation.
The Commissioner in his speech pointed out that most problems in schools would be minimised and, in some cases, tackled if there are trained counsellors in schools, assuring that government will work with the association to achieve a better educational system
Penpushing further reports that Arigbabu said there is need for gradual and sustained efforts for society to appreciate the value of counsellors, explaining that in the absence of trained counsellors there should be some form of provision for a first aid teacher-counsellor assistant to provide immediate help before referring children to trained counsellors
The commissioner disclosed that the pilot programme to take off in 3 lga in Abeokuta should be reviewed to cover the three senatorial areas of Ogun State
Penpushing also reports that Chairperson of the body, earlier in her remarks said the association had come to seek approval for a counselling mentorship programme in their local governments in the state, which include Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North and Odeda local government areas
The Chairperson added that the programme is to hold on Wednesdays of every week in schools to involve students in Junior Secondary School (JSS3) and Senior Secondary School (SSS3), explaining that, subsequently, some of the mentees will graduate to become ambassadors to continue the mentorship among their peers.
