The Ogun State Government on Wednesday inaugurated the State Consultative Committee on Statistics (SSCS), a strategic body aimed at strengthening the State Statistical System for effective governance and decision-making.

Penpushing reports that the inauguration through the Bureau of Statistics, was held at Obas complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta which brought together notable dignitaries, including the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Hon. Olaolu Olabimtan; Nigeria’s first Professor of Statistics, Prof. Biyi Afonja.

The others include retired Professor of Applied Economics and Data Management, Prof. Vincent Akinyosoye; Director of Research Methodology, Mrs. Adebayo Omolola; Statistics Reform Specialist, Mrs. Talabi Oni; Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Statistics of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter, Mr. Alao Olawale and other key stakeholders.

Penpushing further reports that delivering the keynote address, Hon. Olaolu Olabimtan explained that the committee’s mandate goes beyond data collection, as statistics can detect societal problems and guide effective solutions.

The keynote speaker emphasised the government’s commitment to making data-driven decisions in policy formulation and development planning.

Penpushing further reports that in their goodwill messages Mrs. Talabi Oni, Prof. Akinyosoye, and Mr. Alao Olawale, underscored the relevance of statistics in national development and urged the participants and the government to prioritise statistics.

Penpushing also reports that Vincent Akinyosoye, in his inaugural lecture titled “Managing the State Statistical System (SSS) in Ogun State: The State Consultative Committee on Statistics (SSCS)”, highlighted that the system will coordinate statistical activities across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), Local Government Councils, tertiary institutions, and other relevant bodies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Ogun State Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (OGUNCIMMA).

The lecturer outlined the committee’s functions, which include promoting the use of statistics in governance, ensuring only professionals handle statistical duties, improving working conditions for statisticians.

Penpushing reports he said other outlines include advocating for the integration of statistics into government and business policy-making, citing the historical example of Florence Nightingale, by illustrating how statistical evidence can lead to swift policy action and lasting reform.

Meanwhile, the Director for Social and Economic Statistics, Mr. Bolarinde Abimbola, in his remarks to round up the ceremony appealed to organisations to respond promptly to official data requests.
