The Ogun State Government has commenced a free surgical intervention with the registration and assessment of beneficiaries earlier on Monday, and subsequently carried out on patients with breast lumps, hernia, fibroid, goitres, soft tissue sarcoma, lipoma, prostate enlargement, adrenalectomy, and cataract, among others.

Penpushing reports that the project said to be initiated by Governor, Dapo Abiodun, begun with surgical operations performed on patients at the state hospitals in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, and Ilaro, a programme which would involve major and minor surgical operations.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Rotimi Ogungbe shortly after witnessing the maiden free surgical operations on Wednesday at State Hospital Ilaro explained that the first target is 70,000 patients.

Penpushing further reports that Ogungbe who explained that the exercise was part of the Governor’s medical palliative to the residents said the programme was aimed to bring relief to residents with medical challenges and in need of a surgical operation.

‘I have gone round and I have seen the people who have been operated on. What the governor has done is unprecedented in the history of this state. The free surgery programme covers all operations, including orthopaedics, gynaecological, and obstetrics, among others,” he said.

Penpushing also reports that Ogungbe praised Abiodun for making available medical equipment and other surgical resources, expressing satisfaction that medical personnel have been fully mobilised to make the programme a success.

The Yewa zone, coordinator in charge of the programme  Bashirudeen Oni, while speaking noted that  surgical operations would be carried out on patients with breast lumps, hernia, fibroid, goitres, soft tissue sarcoma, lipoma, prostate enlargement, adrenalectomy, and cataract, among others.

Penpushing reports that the coordinator pointed out that the hospital hoped to operate on about eight patients from the start and scale it up as the programme progresses, while the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Yusuf Abdulwahab, commended the residents for turning out in large numbers to benefit from the programme.
