Now that Yayi has affirmed his ogun central roots, it is time to switch gears

In politics, questions of origin are rarely asked for sport. They are often raised to establish identity, legitimacy, and trust. Over the past months, some of us who insisted that Distinguished Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) should clearly and publicly address questions surrounding his ancestral lineage were labelled critics, detractors, or even “anti-Yayi.” I bore that label without resentment, because the demand was never personal — it was principled.

Against this backdrop, Senator Adeola’s categorical clarification at the Isaga Day celebration in Isaga Orile is both timely and commendable. By tracing his paternal ancestry to Isaga Orile and his maternal roots to Kemta Odutolu, he addressed — clearly and publicly — the very question many had been asking: where do you truly come from?

That intervention has now firmly situated him as an Ogun Central son in the eyes of history, culture, and reason. More importantly, it reinforces a fundamental truth in leadership: transparency does not weaken political ambition; it strengthens credibility.

At this stage, it is only fair to state that anyone who still insists that Senator Adeola is an impostor or not genuinely connected to the towns and lineages he has publicly identified with must now come forward with verifiable historical, cultural, or genealogical evidence to support such claims. It is no longer enough to trade in rumours, insinuations, or social-media rants. As a public commentator and stakeholder in Ogun State’s political future, I am open to engaging any such facts, should they exist, and I will not hesitate to take up the matter again on that basis. Until then, intellectual honesty demands that we move away from conjecture and focus on substance.

It is also important to acknowledge that Senator Adeola did not wait until any formal governorship declaration to remember his roots. His infrastructural interventions across Ogun Central — despite representing Ogun West Senatorial District at the National Assembly — reflect a politician who has maintained emotional and developmental ties with his place of origin.

The question of why this renewed emphasis on ancestral roots and home-based interventions coincides with political ambition is one I will reserve for another time. For now, fairness demands that commendation be given where it is due.

However, governance is not sustained by ancestry alone. Having clarified the question of origin, the political conversation must now mature. The next — and more consequential — question is not where Senator Adeola is from, but how he intends to govern Ogun State if entrusted with its leadership.

Much of his present influence at the federal level is tied to his role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations. Should he formally declare for the governorship and eventually assume office, that institutional advantage will naturally change. The people of Ogun State — market women, artisans, farmers, civil servants, youths, and small business owners like me — will therefore expect clarity on how governance will work for them in practical terms.

As 2027 approaches, the people are no longer impressed by titles alone. They want leadership they can feel in their daily lives: better roads to farms and markets, functional schools and health centres, improved security in communities, and economic opportunities that reduce poverty and unemployment. Aspirants must therefore speak less in abstractions and more in clear, practical solutions — how development will reach every ward, how local governments will be strengthened, and how policies will positively affect everyday life.

If Senator Adeola eventually steps fully into the race, the expectation will be simple and fair: beyond pedigree and past interventions, present a clear roadmap that shows how his leadership will improve the lives of ordinary Ogun people. That is the real test ahead.

The gear must now switch — from arguments about lineage to conversations about leadership, delivery, and service. That is the conversation Ogun State truly needs as it looks toward 2027.

Honourable (Chief) Olalekan A. Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba), is Convener, United Premier Movement (UPM), Abeokuta.
