The wife of the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, has denied speculations that she filed for divorce against his husband currently serving life imprisonment over terrorism-related charges.
Penpushing reports that she denied the reports in a statement posted on her verified X handle on Friday describing the claims as false and unverified, adding that her attention was drawn to the false reports circulating online that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband.
The wife emphasized that for the avoidance of doubt, she has not filed for divorce, stating that the publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation, and expressed concern that people continued to fabricate stories about her family without verification.
Penpushing further reports that Okwu-Kanu who got married to her jailed husband in 2009 added that such falsehoods undermine responsible journalism, and urged the public to rely only on information from her directly or through her authorised representatives and thanked those who reached out to confirm the story before sharing it.
The leader of the militant group, is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in November 2025.
Penpushing also reports that he was found guilty on all seven counts and sentenced to life imprisonment on five of them, 20 years on one count, and five years on another, with the sentences to run concurrently.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to overturn his conviction.
