The International Press Institute (IPI) with headquarters in Vienna, Austria has commended the Nigerian National Committee of the globally known institute for its leading role in the affairs of the world press freedom body.

Penpushing reports that the commendation came from the Director of the International Press Institute (IPI) Frane Maroevic and Board Chair, Khadija Patel on Thursday at the meeting of the Institute Executive Board held in Vienna, Austria.

The International Press Institute (IPI) Director told board members that the Nigeria Chapter had carried out reforms that have helped it in organizing and carrying out press freedom activities worthy of emulation by other national committees.

‘The Nigerian National Committee is well-organized and extremely active. It is not only organizing; it is active in the training of our members in Nigeria. The IPI National Committee in Nigeria is a good example of how a national committee should operate.

Penpushing further reports that Maroevic expressed International Press Institute (IPI) leadership’s desire to collaborate with Nigerian chapter on press freedom activities, while directly addressing the Nigerian representative on the board, Raheem Adedoyin, who was at the meeting.

‘We see a great value in what you (IPI Nigeria) is doing. You are doing very well; we will publish your activities. And do involve us in your planning’, the Director of thE International Press Institute emphasised

Penpushing also reports that in similar vein, board chair of the International Press Institute (IPI) Khadija Patel  while speaking at the meeting affirmed that the leadership of world press freedom body regard the Nigerian National Committee very high, adding that the leadership is committed to enhance the work the chapter is doing

The board as at the time of the meeting and filing this report is already mulling giving Nigeria chapter the privilege to host a regional (Africa) International Press Institute (IPI) National Committees summit later in the year.

Penpushing reports that the board meeting considered and approved International Press Institute (IPI) budget for 2024, the institute strategy and the budget for the 2024   World Congress and Media Innovation Festival in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The board meeting, was followed immediately by  an  International Press Institute (IPI)  Africa  Strategy meeting, held at the instance of the Nigerian representative, while the  board meeting was attended physically by  Khadija Patel, Institute  Chair and Chair, Journalist-in-Residence, International Fund for Public Interest Media.

Penpushing reports that others include South Africa; John Daniszewski, Vice Chair and Vice President, Standards, Editor at Large, The Associated Press USA; Raheem Adedoyin, Chair, Editorial Board, The Herald Newspapers, Nigeria and Márton Gergely, Editor-in-Chief HVG, Hungary; Bjørn Sæbø, Editor-in-Chief, Rogalands Avis, Norway, Frane, IPI Executive Director and 12 other board members who joined the meeting virtually.

The International Press Institute (IPI) Africa Strategy meeting, chaired by Maroevic, was attended by Patel, Adedoyin, Scott Griffen, IPI Deputy Director, Amy Brouilette, IPI Director of Advocacy; Nompilo Simanje, IPI Africa Advocacy and Partnerships Lead and Edzodzi Ahiadou, IPI Africa Program Officer.
