The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) said year 2022 has been full of challenges for the broadcast industry in the country, with a call on government to rise up in addressing the epileptic problems in the new year.
Penpushing reports that Executive Secretary
Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria(BON), Dr Yemisi Bamgbose made this known in a statement while reviewing activities of the broadcast industry stressing that more than ever before the industry was battered by poor economic environment which caused untold hardship
“The year 2022 has been a year full of challenges for the broadcast industry in Nigeria. More than ever before, the broadcast industry was battered by a poor economic environment causing untold hardship for broadcast media managers in the country”, Bamgbose emphasized
Penpushing further reports that he noted that, 2022 was a year the National Electricity Grid collapsed many times, magnifying the epileptic public power supply problem while bills for the non-available power supply kept and keeps rising unabated
“It was a year that  the National Electricity Grid collapsed many times, magnifying the epileptic public power supply problem while bills for the non-available power supply kept and keeps rising unabated. The business of broadcasting was made unattractive and debt infested with unbearable running  costs orchestrated by skyrocketing cost of diesel, perennial scarcity of premium motor spirit and an unprecedented devaluation of the Naira”, he added
The Executive Secretary  also pointed out that poor funding of public owned stations, over saturated private radio and  television stations,  dwindling advertising revenue  and imposition of multiple taxation compounded the woes, and pleaded that Nigerian government should put proper funding mechanism in place to alleviate the challenges
“Both Federal and State Governments must put proper funding mechanisms in place to alleviate the many   challenges confronting their stations, while  policies that are capable of stimulating the economy that will enhance advertising of products and services through the broadcast media should be put in place”, he said.
“The Federal Government should deploy necessary funds to the National Broadcasting Commission to enable it implement digitisation programmes that will be beneficial to stakeholders in particular and the public at large”, Bamgbose emphasized
“Finally, media practitioners and managers, most especially the Broadcast Media, should continue to perform their constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour in order to have a just and democratic society where the media continue to play their constitutional role with ease”, he added.
