Nigerian Senior Media Practitioners converge on Lagos to address media related issues

The International Press Institute (IPI) has assembled senior Nigerian media practitioners for conference to address various media related issues which include overview of Nigeria Media Law and legal loopholes editors must avoid among others.

Penpushing reports that the 2-day conference which kick-off on Tuesday also look into topics as, most dangerous laws to pay attention to, understanding media cores and ethics, operational loopholes that can trigger media repression and law suits, as well as case studies on legal challenges newsrooms face

The conference sponsored by MacAthur Foundation and facilitated by Progressive Impact Organisation for Community Development(PRIMORG), a Non-Governmental Organisation had in attendance President International Press Institute (IPI), Nigeria, Musikilu Mojeed, Executive Board member International Press Institute (IPI), Raheem Adedoyin, Dr Adewale Kupoluyi and Richard Akinola.

Penpushing further reports that others are Femi Adesina former spokesperson of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Funke Egbemode, former President Nigerian Guild of Editors, Maureen Chigbo, President Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Yewande Iwuoha(General Manager, Radio Services, Raypower F.M) and Sir Folu Olamiti, Publisher Newspot online Newspapers.

The conference equally recorded presence of President Nigerian Guild of Editors, Eze Anaba, Gbemiga Ogunleye, Prof Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, Yusuf Alli, Tobi Soniyi, Ahmed Shekrau, Secretary International Press Institute, Rafatu Salami (Treasurer International Press Institute, Nigeria, and Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji (Founder Penpushing Media) among others

Penpushing also reports that the Executive Director International Press Institute(IPI), Global,Fran Marovenic  in his goodwill message said the training will further equip participants  on how to handle obstacles facing media industry.

The Director expressed appreciation to MacAthur foundation for sponsoring the media capacity training, adding that the training will equally secure independence of journalism practice, stressing that the global body was committed to the work of International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria

Penpushing reports that he explained that the training is part of components of International Press Institute (IPI) and standing commitment to strengthening Nigeria media landscape, adding that for decades the global body has stood a baton for free press, protection of journalists, empowerment of media in Nigeria.

‘IPI is part of Nigeria media landscape. We engage with Nigeria journalists and media organizations and government bodies to promote environment for press freedom, providing expertise, resources and solidarity to journalists for their dedications

‘This event marks significant milestone in our efforts to media capacity and ethical journalism practice. in an age where information travels like light and with power to change opinion and influence decision, drive change’, he added

‘A well-informed power media not only serve as watchdog of democracy but as a bridge that connect the society and amplifies the voices that will otherwise be remained unheard. In light of these responsibilities the need for independent and ethical journalism has become paramount’, Marovenic emphasised
