The Technical Working Committee reviewing the Gender and Equally Opportunities Bill has made advocacy visit to Nigerian Senate President, Ahmed Lawan to seek his support as co sponsor of the revised bill.
Penpushing reports that, the team presented the revised the bill which has adopted recommendations that addressed initial objections, and was also revised by a Technical Working Committee established under the auspices of the office of Senator Abiodun Olujimi and United Nations(UN) Women, chaired by Saudatu Mahdi.
The Senate President who gave his support in principle commended the team for strategically making the visit, while the constitution is being reviewed, and assured of his support and commitment to advancing women’s right and full participation in governance.
Penpushing further reports that, it is recalled that the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill was initially sponsored by Senator Abiodun Olujimi in 2015, just as the Senate President noted that, “women make up half of Nigeria’s population, they should not be denied the opportunity to serve government at all levels”
Meanwhile, the advocacy visit included Dame Pauline Tallen (Minister of Women Affairs) represented by Dr. Asabe Bashir Director General National Centre for Women Development, Comfort Lamptey United Nations(UN) Women Country Representative, Professor Joy Ezeilo, Ebere Ifendu, Princess Jummai Idonije, Olabukunola Williams and Toun Okewale –Sonaiya
