Nigerian Media practitioners are to converge on Ibadan, Oyo State Capital for a 2-day workshop designed to focus on using the Freedom of Information Act for Investigative Reporting and by familiarizing themselves with the key provisions of the act.

Penpushing reports that a statement issued by Deputy Executive Director Media Rights Agenda, Ayode Longe said the workshop will hold between Tuesday, October 31, and Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Palms 77 Hotel, number 67/68 Besides Army Officers Mess, Agodi Government Reservation Area(GRA), Ibadan.

The Executive Director explained that the workshop is being organized by the Media Rights Agenda with support from the MacArthur Foundation through the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ)

‘The objective of the workshop is to sensitize participating journalists and build their capacity to use the FOI Act for investigative reporting by familiarizing them with the key provisions of the Act, how to make requests for information under the Act to increase their chances of success, and the enforcement mechanisms and options available to them whenever they are wrongfully denied access to the information they requested’, he added.

Penpushing further reports that the workshop will be fully residential for all participants in order to maximize the available time, given the intensive nature of the workshop, and will hold between  9.00 am to 5.00 pm daily

‘The workshop will be fully residential for all participants in order to maximize the available time, given the intensive nature of the workshop.  Each participant will be required to attend all sessions of the workshop’, the statement reads.

Penpushing also reports that Longe added that the workshop is being carried out under the Collaborative Media Engagement for Development, Inclusion and Accountability (CMEDIA) Project, a multi-level intervention that supports media independence, improved transparency, accountability, and good governance in state and local governments with more public awareness on the need for accountability, and amplified marginalised voices.
