The Nigerian Government has renamed the University of Abuja after former military ruler Yakubu Gowon, which was a resolution by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to honour the elder statesman.
Penpushing reports that the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu, explaining that the university will hence be known as Yakubu Gowon University.
The Minister, however, clarified that the name change will still need to be approved by the National Assembly, while record has it that the university was established on January 1st, 1988 as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run both conventional and distance learning academic programmes.
Penpushing further reports that it was the first University in the country to assume such a dual mandate at inception, and currently has nine faculties, the College of Health Sciences, a School of Remedial Studies, a Centre for Distance Learning, an Institute of Education, and a School of Postgraduate Studies, among others.
Meanwhile all existing programmes, centres and institutes are highlighted on the drop-down menu and has a student population of 55, 364 and a staff strength of 3, 362.
