The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has elected Yakubu Maikyau a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as its President after polling a total of 22,342 votes to defeat his major opponent, Joe-Kyari Gadzama, who is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who recorded 10,842 votes..

Penpushing reports that, at the election at the election which started at 12 noon on Saturday, July 16, and ended at 12 midnight showed that the third candidate, Taidi Gunu, clinched 380 votes, representing 4 per cent of the total 34,554 votes that were tallied for the position.

The  election produced other officers  which include Adesina Adegbite( General Secretary), Daniel Ka-Ayli( Assistant General Secretary), Chinyere Obasi (National Welfare Secretary), Habeeb Lawal(National Publicity Secretary), Olawole Ajiboye ( Assistant Publicity Secretary) and Anze-Bishop Ladidi(Treasurer).

Penpushing further reports the election equally produced Linda Bala as 1st Vice President of the association, Clement Ugo as 2nd Vice President and Amanda Demechi-Asagba as the 3rd Vice President, while in similar vein, the body elected 20 lawyers as members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) General Council to represent the Western, Eastern and Northern zones of lawyers in the country.

The new leadership in his acceptance speech Maikyau solicited for support of co-contestants, for the benefits of the association and membership, and took time to laud the outgoing executive led by Mr Akpata, for qualitative performances in the last two years.

Penpushing also reports that,  Maikyau promised that the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) during his tenure would speak truth to power and promote the rule of law and protect human rights in the country.

The outgoing President on his part, commended the members of the association electoral committee for their hard work to ensure the success of the election, and advised those that lost in the election to accept the results in good faith in the overall interest of the body.
