The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has elected its former General Secretary Afam Osigwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) as the new President during election held on Saturday, having polled more than half of the votes cast

Penpushing reports that Osigwe, a scribe of the association between 2014 and 2016, polled 20,435 votes, to defeat his two rivals, while Tobenna Erojikwe came a distant second with 10,998 votes, and Chukwuka Ikuazom, who announced withdrawing from the race in the middle of the election came third with 9,018 votes.

The voting by accredited members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) was conducted electronically between 12 a.m. and 11.59 a.m. on Saturday, and as at the time voting closed, 40,451 votes were tallied for the office of the association’s president with 205 abstentions.

Penpushing further reports that according to the results portal updated every minute during the election by the Electoral Committee of the body of lawyers, winners equally emerged from the elections of nine other national officers.

The Zonal representatives of the General Council of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) from the Eastern, Northern and Western zones were also elected, while the election for the President was restricted to eligible candidates from the Eastern zone of the association, whose turn it is, under the association’s strict zoning arrangement, to fill the position for the next two years.

Penpushing also reports that the two other regional groups are the Western zone and the Northern zone, which produced the outgoing President in 2022, while a splinter zone, called the Mid-Western zone emerged from the Western region in 2014 to produce Augustine Alegeh, as the President, however, the group has since retracted to its low-key status within the Western zone.

The newly elected President, whose legal career has spanned 25 years from when he was called to the Bar in 1999, is set to take over as the 32nd President of the association when the outgoing President, Yakubu Maikyau, completes his two-year tenure in August.

Penpushing reports that the inauguration of the national officers is billed to take place during the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 2024 Annual Conference scheduled to hold in Lagos between 23 and 28 August, 2024.
