The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) as the incumbent Justice Olukayode Ariwoola retires from the office in the next few days.
Penpushing reports that the National Judicial Council (NJC) at its two-day meeting, which was concluded on Thursday, and as a way to avoid vacuum recommended Kekere-Ekun to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment.
The Director of Information, National Judicial Council (NJC) Soji Oye, disclosed this in a statement explaining that it was part of the decisions taken by the council at its 106th meeting, adding that the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) presides over the meetings.
The statement added that in similar development the council recommended 26 other candidates for appointment as judges of courts in various states to the Governors of their respective states for confirmation.
Penpushing further reports that Oye stated that the council in the same vein, recommended a candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to President Tinubu for confirmation, while this brings to a total of 28, including the Chief of Justice of Nigeria(CJN) nominee, the candidates recommended for various judicial appointments.
Meanwhile, Ariwoola, who took office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) two years ago, will retire on clocking the retirement age of 70 on August 22, 2024, while Kekere-Ekun’s appointment by the President is subject to Senate confirmation.
