A mother, identified as Joy Okonkwo has allegedly stabbed her newborn baby to death shortly after giving birth to the baby boy in Olocha-Adogba, Awgu, a community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State,
Penpushing reports that the 18-year-old woman was said to have used a kitchen knife to stab the child to death, shortly after she was delivered of the baby at home, a decision, a source said she took in response to the advice of her 60-year-old mother, Christiana Okonkwo.
The Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe who confirmed in a statement on Friday, said the sad development occurred at about 1 p.m. on Monday, explaining that the child was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead
Penpushing further reports that, Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, disclosed that, as at the time of filing this report the corpse has been deposited in a morgue of a hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The police spokesperson said two suspects have been arrested, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Enugu, to investigate and prosecute the suspects.
Penpushing also reports that, the police boss ordered that the suspects will be prosecuted for alleged conspiracy and murder of the child, as he urged residents of the community to maintain peace and avoid acts that could lead to the breakdown of law and order in the community.
Meanwhile, the commissioner in the same vein called on the residents to support the police in the matter and assured them that the suspects would be meticulously investigated and prosecuted within record time.
