A female lawyer Adachukwu Cukelu-Okafor who was declared wanted by the police authorities for alleged abuse of her 11-year-old house girl (name withheld) in Anambra state, has surrendered to the police.
Penpushing reports that the legal practitioner was said to have allegedly committed the crime in Akpaka, Onitsha in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, after accusing the house maid of touching her daughter.
The female lawyer was said to have used a broken bottle, knife and electric iron to brutalise the maid who began staying with her on 5 January, 2024, and thereafter went into hiding which prompted the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare in Anambra State, Ify Obinabo, to declare her wanted.
Penpushing further reports that following the lawyer’s disappearance, the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, placed a N2 million bounty on her, a development which forced the suspect to surrender herself to the Anambra State Police Command.
The media aide to the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare Anambra State Chidinma Ikeanyionwu in a statement confirmed surrender of the lawyer to the police, adding that the Commissioner visited the survivor and that she is set to be discharged from a hospital.
Penpushing also reports that Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State had, days after the incident, said his administration had begun the prosecution of Ms Cukelu-Okafor over the abuse of the house help.
