A High Court judge in Borno State, Justice Haruna Mshelia, who was kidnapped while travelling from Biu town to Maiduguri with his wife, driver, and police orderly, and in captivity for two months has regained freedom
Penpushing reports that it is recalled that Msheila was kidnapped on June 24, 2024 by suspected members of Boko Haram, between Buratai and Gujba village, a development which resulted in the death of his police orderly.
The release of the judge by his abductors was said to be on Saturday, as announced on a WhatsApp platform of Borno state lawyers, while as at the time of the announcement his wife and his driver remain in captivity.
Penpushing further reports that a follow-up message urged continued prayers for their safety, while it was not clear whether ransom was paid for the release of the judge, while as at the time of filing this report police are also yet to speak on the matter.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Maiduguri branch, Barrister Hamza Zannah, confirmed the release of the judge who was a former private lawyer, appointed to the Borno State Judiciary in May 2012.
Penpushing also reports that Msheila was one of two High Court judges selected from private practitioners in the state, while his colleague, Justice Mohammed Fadawu, was recently elevated to the Court of Appeal in July.
