Japan’s Government commits $2.3million of funds to strengthen health system in Borno state

The Government of Japan has committed a total of $2.3million of funds for strenghetening health systems in Borno State of Nigeria, and it will be implemented over a 12-month period starting from 31 March 2021.

Penpushing reports that this project will be implemented by UNOPS in close partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, Borno State Government, North East Development Commission (NEDC), and Borno State Ministry of Health.

The project will strengthen healthcare provision, build resilience of health systems in conflict-affected communities, and enable primary healthcare facilities to provide acceptable standards of medical care in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

The project is expected to directly benefit approximately 7.1million people within 26 Local Government Areas of the State, of which 24% are children and approximately 45% are women, while two new oxygen plants will be constructed and equipped within the premises of State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri and Biu General Hospital.

Penpushing further reports that, in addition, 23 primary health centres within Borno State will be equipped with solar refrigerators to scale up vaccine storage capacity.

The Guest of Honour at the project launch event held virtually with key stakeholders joining remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, delivered keynote address and launched the project.

Penpushing also reports that, the event was attended by stakeholders and dignitaries from various ministries, government institutions, development partners and United Nations (UN) agencies, Mr. Edward Kallon, United Nations(UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Shinozawa Takayuki, Chargé d’ Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, and Mr. Mohammed Goni Alkali – Managing Director, North-East Development Commission.
