Segun Showunmi in Ibadan
The workers at The Polytechnic, Ibadan on Monday embarked on indefinite strike over non-implementation of new national minimum wage introduced by the federal government.
Penpushing reports that the workers which include academic and non-academic shut down all gates leading to the institution and declared indefinite strike during a congress by the unions, declaring the strike was total.
The general meeting of the academic and non-academic staff of the institution convened by a Joint committee of all Staff Unions said the governing council and the Oyo State government have repeatedly refused to implement the minimum wage for workers in the citadel of learning.
Penpushing further reports that the Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), Comrade Abiodun Abegunde, noted that the issue must be fought to a logical conclusion, adding that lots of efforts have been put in place to resolve the dispute, but to no avail.
The chairman added that the wage structure being demanded by the unions is even lower than that being enjoyed by sister institutions in other states, while the Chairman, Non-Academic Staff Union, (NASU), of the institution, Comrade Ibrahim Akande said the Governing Council itself was incapacitated by the overreaching activities of the consultant.
