The member of House of Representatives representing Ogun State at the national assembly, Hon. Afolabi Afuape has explained that his free summer coaching programme for secondary school students is aimed at keeping them away from social vices while strengthening their academic performance and preparing them for responsible adulthood.
Penpushing reports that Afuape stated this on Thursday while teaching students at the fifth edition of the Afolabi Moruf Afuape Summer Class held at Nawairudeen High School, Isabo, and St. Peter’s Primary School, Ake, both in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The lawmaker added that his major objective was to support and encourage motivated students in their academic pursuits while ensuring that young people remained productively engaged during the holiday.
Penpushing further reports that Afuape emphasized that the programme is designed to eliminate social vices capable of disrupting students’ academic growth and development and help them become useful members of society who could attain greater heights.
“The best students after they write their external examinations will be given tangible gifts. Beyond that, these students will submit their JAMB and WAEC results so that we can see them through university and monitor their progress’, he stated
Penpushing also reports that he assured the students of continued support, stressing that the programme was not politically motivated but a personal initiative funded from his pocket.
The federal lawmaker explained that he had equally been contributing to the development of the schools hosting the coaching centres by responding to their needs whenever such requests fell within what he could afford, assuring that he would continue the programme for as long as it is needed’.
Penpushing reports that during the coaching session, Afuape taught the students Economics, focusing on the topic “Firm and Industry,” which included the definitions, differences and other factors relating to the concepts.
The class was lively and interactive as the students responded enthusiastically to questions and actively participated in the lesson, while Afuape advocated a review of Nigeria’s education curriculum to give greater attention to vocational and practical education.
“I will continue this programme for as long as it is needed. I am of the views that we need to look into the curriculum of our education. To me, we need to do more of vocational studies,” he said.
Penpushing further reports that he observed that Nigeria’s limited emphasis on practical skills compared with countries such as China had contributed to gaps between theoretical knowledge and practical competence, stressing the need for greater incorporation of vocational studies such as furniture making and other technical skills into the education system.
The programme also featured the distribution of exercise books to all students present at the coaching centres, while a female student of Baptist Girls College, speaking on behalf of the students, appreciated Afuape for his continued support.
“On behalf of all my fellow students, we thank you, Hon. Moruf Afuape, for your constant support despite the financial status of our parents. May God continue to replenish your pocket, sir,” she said.
Penpushing also reports that the programme, has been on annually for the past five years, which provides free coaching for students from Senior Secondary School One (SS1) to Senior Secondary School (SS3), particularly those whose parents may be unable to afford the cost of holiday coaching.
