Gunmen have shot dead Inspector of Police Henry Effiong when they invaded the residence of Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Rex Anunobi, in Owerri, Imo State, where the victim was on guard duty
Penpushing reports that sources said the incident occurred on Monday adding that the armed men first disarmed the inspector, snatched rifle as well as his phones before killing him on the spot
The Imo State Police Command Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, did not, however, mention the name of the slain inspector. Penpushing further reports that Okoye, a deputy superintendent of police, said that upon receiving the report of the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, directed an investigation into it.
The police spokesperson said the investigation was to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and then track down the attackers, however, disclosed that the remains of the deceased inspector were subsequently deposited at the mortuary
“In compliance with the directive, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), alongside the DPO, New Owerri Division, visited the scene, where necessary examinations were conducted and relevant exhibits recovered and secured.
Penpushing also reports that the statement said the Commissioner of Police has commiserated with the family of the deceased inspector and assured them that the command would track down all the attackers.
The statement added that the police boss lamented that the incident was a painful reminder of the risks and sacrifices police officers face in the discharge of their duties,” he said.
Penpushing reports that the police spokesperson in the statement disclosed that the police have arrested two people allegedly linked to the killing of the inspector, at the scene shortly after the incident was reported and gave their identities as include Olivia Patrick, 31, and ThankGod ,25
The spokesperson said the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Invetigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, while efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects.
Penpushing further reports that He assured residents of Imo State that the police command was on top of the situation, stressing that appropriate security measures were in place to safeguard lives and property across the state.
Meanwhile, the police image maker in the statement appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that may assist the ongoing investigation.
