Gunmen suspected to be herders have killed an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Emmanuel Igwe and a farmer identified as Ajah Okafor in Ishiagu, a community in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Penpushing reports that the wife of the official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was reportedly abducted by the gunmen, who intercepted their car along the Ishiagu-Mpu Road in the area.

The slain farmer is said to be the father of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth wing member, Damian Okafor, just as a security source in Ishiagu is a border community and a gateway to Abia and Enugu states said the incident happened around 12 midnight of Sunday

Penpushing reports that the bereaved son of the farmer confirmed the killing of his father, explaining that the gunmen after attacking the car the electoral commission official was driving abducted his wife and fled into the bush.

“In their bid to escape, they ran into my father, who was on his farm tending to his crops. They proceeded to kill my father so that he will not raise alarm and expose their presence in the area,” he said.

Penpushing further reports that the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ebonyi State confirmed the killing of the commission’s official and the abduction of the wife.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner identified the slain official as Emmanuel Igwe, an assistant electoral officer in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, affirming that the official and his wife were on their way back from Abia State when the gunmen attacked them.

Penpushing also reports that the Ebonyi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Onome Onvwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident, adding that the gunmen, suspected to be herders, shot the man in the head through the windshield of his car.

The police spokesperson said the gunmen used a knife to cut the throat of the second victim who was killed on the farm, stating that as at the time of filing this report the command has commenced a manhunt for the gunmen.
