Gunmen kidnapped a newly married couple alongside number of residents, as well as killing two members of a local vigilante group on Sunday morning at Shola Quarters in Katsina metropolis of Katsina State.

Penpushing reports the attack by the gunmen lasted for over an hour at the quarters located behind the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University Teaching Hospital (formerly Federal Medical Center) in heart of the city, which hosts commercial shops and residents as well as government offices.

The source explained that the terrorists invaded the area around 1:25 a.m and operated for over an hour without being confronted by state security personnel, adding that the vigilante members had to retreat to their houses when the bandits overpowered them

“It was the vigilante members that even stood against them but they (bandits) killed two of them and wounded the other two. The vigilante members had to retreat to their houses when the bandits overpowered them and it was just now (morning) that we retrieved the two corpses and took the wounded ones to the hospital,” the source said.

Penpushing further reports that, a cousin of the abducted newly-wed, Usman Masanawa in his narration said he had to relocate when the bandits arrived, adding that he was helpless when the husband called him.

“These (attacks) are becoming scary. I used to reside in the area but had no option but to relocate. When they came, Yusuf Bishir (the husband) called to inform me but there was nothing I could have done. We went there this morning and they didn’t even enter the house through the entrance gate; they smashed the wall and got access into the house’, Masanawa said.

Penpushing also reports that, Masanawa as at the time of filing this report said the number of residents abducted couldn’t be ascertained, while other residents confirmed that some houses were attacked and  number of people abducted.

The cousin of the newly married couple said, there was need to have time in knowing those who have been abducted as well as those who got scared and ran to other areas, adding that aside from the wounded vigilante members, other residents who sustained gunshot injuries had been taken to the teaching hospital for treatment.

Penpushing reports that, the Kastina State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Gambo Isa, when contacted said police are already on the trail of the gunmen, but was not forthcoming to provide further information as at the time of this report.
