A Medical Practitioner with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Dr Ekanem Ephraim has been kidnapped at about 7.30 pm from her residence by armed gunmen who pretended to be patients home.
Penpushing reports that the incident occurred on Thursday while reports have it that this was not the first time the abduction of medical doctors occurred in the state, which forced the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) embarking on strike.
The latest kidnap has equally forced members of the association to embark on a total indefinite strike on Sunday in solidarity with the abduction of their colleague, lamenting that despite all their efforts to ensure the release of their colleague, she has remained in captivity.
Penpushing further reports that the decision of the strike was contained in a communique signed by Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Cross River branch, Dr Felix Archibon after an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) on Sunday in Calabar.
The association in the resolution declared to embark on a total and indefinite withdrawal of medical services effective immediately in solidarity with their member still in the hands of her abductors, stressing that this withdrawal of medical service will involve all hospitals in the state, federal, state, private and mission.
Penpushing also reports that the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) posited that the state government should activate all necessary instruments at its disposal to ensure the timely and unconditional release of the abducted member.
The association, however, regretted the hardship its withdrawal of services would have on the citizens of the state, but appealed to the relevant security agencies to ensure a timely release of its abducted member.
